Mixtures of aerosols with lognormal size distribution are usually not lognormally distributed and may be bimodal or trimodal. In addition to fitting the data, the mathematical form of the lognormal distribution is well suited for the calculation of many properties of aerosols. For a lognormal distribution, the particle diameters display a characteristic skew distribution (long tail for large sizes), but the distribution of the logarithms of particle diameters has a symmetrical normal distribution.

Such a system is labor-intensive in terms of collection and analysis of the filters. A third channel collects the particles on a TeflonĀ® filter for XRF analysis, and a comparable fourth channel provides a sample for the measurement of major ions through ion chromatography (IC). In some units, only a single Teflon filter is collected for sequential XRF and IC analyses. 2 Continuous monitors One approach toward obtaining continuous information on airborne PM involves the development of measurement systems for major constituents (nitrate, sulfate, organic, and elemental carbon).

During July 2001, there was a coordinated intensive monitoring effort involving the collaboration of 26 programs, including five of the supersites that cover the region from Houston (TX) to New Hampshire. A smaller effort was mounted during January 2002. An effort will be made to collect the data from all of the colloborating programs and incorporate them into the database. Initial operations of the website and database are planned for August 2004. These efforts include conducting rigorous tests of the new commercial monitoring instruments as well as new state-of-the-art methods such as PILS, SEAS, and single-particle mass spectrometry systems.
