Much of this work has been focused on the protective effect of fluoride on dental aeries, an action which has been demonstrated repeatedly and is now generally accepted. Whether or not there might be an equally beneficial action on bone remains uncertain in spite of increasing attention to the subject (over 16,000 papers have been published on the biological effects of fluoride) 2# 4 The recognition and description of skeletal fluorosis and reports of osteosclerosis in patients living in endemic areas having high concentrations of fluoride in the water supply, especially in India" generated the impression that fluoride stimulates bone formation and that this action might be of benefit to patients with osteoporosis.

The purpose of this paper is to report the results of studies designed to determine the effect of fluoride on the physical properties of bone. Methods The bone specimens for mechanical testing were obtained from growing rabbits and sheep which had been given sodium fluoride in the drinking water at concentrations of 1 ppm, 10 ppm, 100 ppm and 500 ppm, plus controls (distilled water). ). The various studies included two groups of rabbits and one of sheep. In one group of rabbits 13 animals: control, 1, 100, and 500 ppm fluoride), sacrificed after 6 months, the metatarsals were loaded in torsion.
